VENUE

The PTO US Open is based in Irving’s Levy Event Plaza just 10 minutes from DFW International Airport. Levy Event Plaza opened in 2020 and skirts the edge of Lake Carolyn, a 125-acre man-made lake at the centre of the city’s Las Colinas Urban Center. A purpose-built grandstand area will place athletes and spectators in the middle of the action with easy access to the swim venue, transition, athlete services, expo area and finish line.

You’ll race on the same streets as the pros, with age-group events having different length laps to provide an optimal mass-participation experience out on the course.

100KM race

KEY INFO

The 100km race format will challenge you to straddle the red-line between speed and endurance and the 2022 PTO US Open features a stunning Texan course that’ll really get the blood pumping.

Presented by FORM, the event’s Official Swim Partner, the swim will begin by jumping into the pristine waters of Lake Carolyn at the centre of the Levy Event Plaza.

The final decision on wetsuit use will be made on race day dependent on water temperature readings. Please pack your wetsuit just in case.

There will be a time-trial style start with athletes going off at regular intervals. You’ll navigate two 1000m (0.62-mile) laps where there will be with ample spectator opportunities to help bring you back to the shore in style after the full 2000m (1.24-miles). After climbing back onto dry land, there will be a short run to transition.

The 80km (50-mile) bike course heads out on smooth, flat roads for three 26.6km (16.5-mile) laps. We’re expecting age-groupers and pros alike to post some sizzling times as the day warms up. With fully closed roads and a 20m draft rule in effect, you can bank on as fair a race as possible. There will also be on course aid stations to help you stay hydrated under the Texan sun.

After returning to transition, it’ll be time to head out on the 18km (11.2-mile) run featuring three 6km (3.7-mile) laps. Like the bike, it’ll be flat and fast with the paved surface giving you the chance to put together a stellar performance ending with a finish line experience fit for the world’s best.

Precision Fuel & Hydration

Staying well fuelled and hydrated during your PTO Tour race is essential if you want to perform at your best (and avoid the dreaded DNF!).

That’s why Precision Fuel & Hydration will be providing their award-winning electrolyte drinks, energy gels and chews on course.

Race-Day Nutrition

Here’s what’ll be available in your race pack on on-course at this year’s race.

Your race pack will include a packet of all-natural PH 1500 drink mix, a very strong electrolyte drink designed to help you start well hydrated.

Our aid stations will be stocked with PH 1000, a strong electrolyte drink designed to help you stay hydrated when you’re sweating. It contains around 2x as much sodium as a standard sports drink.

PF 30 Energy Gels will also be out on the course. They contain 30g of carb and have a very mild, neutral taste, reducing flavour fatigue during longer efforts. The texture is designed to reduce stickiness in the mouth and minimise the need to wash them down with fluid immediately.

PF 30 Energy Chews can feel more satisfying to eat than gels during longer races and when working at slightly lower intensities, making them a great way to mix up your fuelling plan. Each packet contains 2 chews efficiently delivering 15g of carb each. The “Original” flavour chews have a mild, neutral taste and look out for the Mint & Lemon chews for a refreshing option when you’re working hard in hot conditions.

Advice and Special Offers From Precision Fuel & Hydration

You’ll receive a detailed Fuelling and Hydration briefing email a few weeks before your event with advice on how to best use the products on course to maximise your performance.

If you want to try the on-course fuel and hydration in training, you can pick up a PTO Tour Taster Pack. Don’t forget to use the code DEATHTODNF to get 20% off your first order.

PTO Tour competitors will also have access to VIP support from the Precision Fuel & Hydration team in the build up to the big day, so you can be sure that you’re ready to race.

Death To DNF With Precision Fuel & Hydration At The PTO US Open

On-course nutrition at the PTO US Open will be provided by Precision Fuel & Hydration, who have created a short briefing video covering what’s available to keep you fueled and hydrated. You can also use their free Fuel & Hydration Planner to get a personalised strategy for the race:

Tips For Racing In Hot Weather

Keep Cool before the race

Avoiding overheating before exercise is important, so keep cool by sticking indoors, or to the shade, as much as possible in the days before your race.

Actively lowering your core body temperature immediately before the start can reduce the stress on your thermoregulatory system. This can be done by taking a cold shower, using cooling jackets (or a cold, wet towel placed on your neck and forehead), or drinking an ice slushie drink.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable clothes and avoid dark colours, both in the run up to and during the event.

Start and Stay Hydrated

You’ll be sweating more in the heat, which reduces your blood plasma volume and leads to dehydration. This increases the strain on your cardiovascular system and impedes your body’s ability to keep cool. Make sure you’re drinking enough to meet your increased sweat losses.

But don’t just drink tons of plain water, you’ll risk diluting your blood sodium levels. Add sodium to your pre-race drinks and make the most of the electrolyte drinks on-course. Learn more.

Pace Yourself

Appropriate pacing is crucial to maintaining your performance as well as protecting you from heat illness.

We offload heat mainly through the evaporation of sweat, but when conditions are hot or humid, offloading that heat is more difficult. Inappropriate pacing may come with a heavy price, causing overheating that’s tricky to reverse.

Accept that you’re not going to be able to perform at the same intensity in extreme heat. Being comfortable with that fact will go a long way to aid success in these conditions.

Race broadcast:
If you’re in Europe or the Indian Subcontinent, you can watch exclusively on Eurosport. For viewers anywhere else in the world, you can watch live on PTO+.

Swim Course

The pros will take on a two-lap swim in Lake Carolyn. At the end of the first 1000m lap, there will be an Australian exit, giving fans the chance to see the athletes run across the lakeside before diving back in the for the final lap. Once out the water, they’ll head into T1 to grab their bikes.

Bike Course

Once out onto the bike course, the pros will take on a seven-lap course giving spectators – whether out on the course or around the grandstand near transition – the opportunity to see the athletes multiple times, ramping up the excitement before the deciding run.

The course features around 75m of elevation per lap (so 525m in total) and the gradient never tips above 3%, making it a gradual rise to the turnaround point before a fast run-in back to transition. With only one turnaround at the top of the course, the bike leg will be far less technical than the PTO Canadian Open, potentially giving different athletes the opportunity to shine.

Run Course

Once off the bike and through T2, it’s on to the 18km run. The run features five 3.6km laps including an out-and-back section at the top of the course so athletes can gauge the gaps to their competitors. It’s expected to be seriously hot, which could take its toll on athletes though they will have the opportunity to refuel and take on electrolytes at the Precision Fuel & Hydration aid station.

With 18km in the bank, it’s onto the carpet to cross an epic finish line fit for these giants of the sport.

Social Referral Rebate

The PTO Tour Social Referral Rebate programme allows you to earn 100% of your entry fee back. All you need to do is refer three friends to the same race! Here’s how it works…

The Social Referral Rebate programme gives you 100% of your PTO Tour event entry back if you refer three other athletes who also register for the same event. It’s our way of rewarding you for spreading the word about our events.

Once you’ve completed registration, you will receive a registration confirmation email from Active Network. It’s easy to spot – the one with a big QR code in it!

In this email you’ll find a referral link to share with your friends, family, clubmates, clients or whoever else shares your passion for triathlon.

If someone else signs up for the event using your code, that registration counts towards one of your referrals. You’ll need three to get your entry fee rebate.

If you can’t find your link in your Active Network confirmation email, you can follow these steps to get your code.

  • Login to your Active Network account at: myevents.active.com
  • Scroll down until you locate your event registration
  • Directly under the registration, next to text that states: Refer your friends, followed by social media icons, click copy link to get your unique link.

Your entry refund will be processed on the last day of the same month in which your event takes place. It may take a few days to hit your account.

Yes – the relay captain could refer their other teammates to sign up. Team members who sign up will receive their own code upon registering.

No, only entries for the same event will count. So if you enter the PTO US Open, that’s the only event for which your referral link will be valid.

If a registration is transferred, no referral rebate will be applied.

Yes, the referral rebate will be applied based on registration fee of the new category.

No, cancelled registrants will not receive rebates.

In order to qualify, all referred athletes must have a valid registration on the day of the event, whether or not they actually take part in the event or not.

If you entered before the Social Referral Programme was live, you can still take advantage of it. However, the mechanism will be a little different to that outlined above. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] or [email protected] to start the process.

The Social Referral Rebate programme is non-transferrable. All referred athletes must have valid registrations on the day of the event. Referrals only valid for the same event signed up to by the original referrer. If referrer’s original entry is subsidised, the rebate amount will reflect the subsidised entry amount.

Cancellation policy

Injuries/medical conditions

We understand that sometimes training for an event doesn’t go to plan, so we’re offering a 100% refund up to 21 days prior to the race if you get injured or have another medical issue that prevents you from taking part. For COVID-related cancellations, please see the section below.

All you need to do is send us a medical certificate/acknowledgment of your injury from a healthcare professional and we’ll refund you.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

COVID

We know that COVID continues to add a level of uncertainty to planning triathlon event schedules but we’re committed to making sure you get the race experience you deserve.

As well as a full refund if the event itself is cancelled due to COVID,  we’re also offering a 100% refund if you’re unable to attend or race a PTO Tour event due to personal COVID related issues – such as a requirement to isolate following contact with an infected individual, infection with COVID, lack of sufficient recovery from a COVID infection or other similar reason.

All you need to do is submit evidence of your positive COVID test (PCR or antigen/lateral flow) or other supporting medical report confirming you inability to race.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

Becoming a parent

Becoming a parent is an important time in any athlete’s life – and the inflexibility of your race schedule shouldn’t add to the stress. That’s why we’re offering a 100% refund up to 21 days prior to the event if you are imminently due to become a parent or have just become a parent and are prevented from racing due to this.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

Other circumstances

For non-medical cancellation reasons more than 21 days out from the event, such as family emergencies, bereavements, relocation or other circumstances that prevent you from racing, please get in touch with us at [email protected] and we’ll be as flexible as we possibly can to avoid you missing out.

Covid info

We understand the powerful effect COVID has had on the triathlon world, so to reassure you we’ve put together a simple COVID protocols list and associated cancellation policy.

Covid Protocols

  • All local and national restrictions/guidelines in enforcement at the time of the event will be enforced in addition to any and all PTO COVID requirements which will be clearly communicated prior to the event.
