Biography

Nick Kastelein

Australian-born Nick Kastelein is a regular on the podium at triathlon, IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events. His major victories have come at IRONMAN Zurich, Switzerland in 2017 and the Allgau Classic Triathlon in Germany in 2019 – his favourite event.

His excellent achievements on the 70.3 IRONMAN circuit to date include a sixth at the 2016 World Championship in Mooloolaba and second-place finishes in Barcelona (2017) and Finland (2019).

Nick describes that Barcelona podium back in 2017 as his most memorable race to date – but also his most painful. He broke his collarbone at the final corner of the bike stage on his way to second place behind his good friend Jan Frodeno. Despite the injury, Nick recovered in just 10 weeks to go on to win IRONMAN Zurich, a phenomenal feat of recovery in the circumstances.

Family heavily influenced Nick’s eventual career choice, as he says his father is “crazy about sport” and he believes that’s where he got his passion from. He favours the ‘adventurous’ disciplines of the bike and the run, and doesn’t really find swimming 25m laps in the pool too much fun.

It has not been all smooth sailing for Nick during his triathlon career so far – his most embarrassing moment came during a windy Challenge Melbourne when he was blown of his bike while riding in a straight line.

Despite being Australian, Nick now describes Girona, Spain as his home. That is where his training relationship with Frodeno developed, after they both moved to the area in 2014. They met purely by chance at a local swimming pool.

Nick’s best training tip is to “always leave one bullet in the chamber” but he has yet to decide what his advice is for race day itself!
