Tim Van Berkel
Family clearly plays a big part in Tim Van Berkel’s life. He admits his mum is his hero while he is most proud of being a Dad.
‘Berks’ first got into triathlon purely by chance, to help him keep fit for what was then his keener interest, Australian Rules Football. His first real foray into the higher levels was competing in the 20-24 division in the 2005 Hawaii ITU Age Group Triathlon World Championships.
Tim finished ninth there and it was to be his final race as an amateur. He turned professional and says to this day the thing he is most proud of is “avoiding a 9-5 job”.
Since that pivotal decision in Tim’s life he has been competing at elite level for more than 15 years, winning a string of events in IRONMAN, 70.3 and Challenge Family competition.
His finest performance in the World Championship remains his seventh in 2014, though in 2019 his 16th rounded off yet another excellent season which again showcased admirable consistency.
Tim’s favourite disciplines are, in order, “run, bike, swim. I’m a land creature” while from a pain perspective no particular race stands out. “They’re all painful,” he tells us.
Away from the triathlon course, ‘Berks’ is a huge fan of house music, enjoys mixed martial arts and says his favourite cheat meal is beer and a burger.
While roads and water play a massive part in his life, he also has an affinity for grass, admitting that probably his biggest quirk is “my lawn is my pride and joy”.
The best advice he can pass on meanwhile is “consistency is key” when it comes to training, and then “visualise the race” when it comes to go time.
