Race Venue

The centre of the PTO Canadian Open will be in beautiful Hawrelak Park, at the heart of Edmonton’s scenic river valley. The 68-hectare park hosts many of Edmonton’s iconic events. A purpose-built stadium area will place athletes and spectators in the middle of the action with easy access to the swim venue, transition, athlete services, expo area and finish line. Hawrelak Park is located a short 5km commute or transit ride from downtown Edmonton.

You’ll race on the same streets as the pros, with age-group events having different length laps to provide an optimal mass-participation experience out on the course.

Swim – 2km

PTO Canadian Open 100km Race Swim Course Map

Presented by FORM, the event’s Official Swim Partner, the swim will be in the freshwater manmade Hawrelak Park Lake, adjacent to the stadium area. Water temperature on race day is likely to be around 23-24°C, making it a warm but wetsuit-legal swim. If the water temperature is 24.6°C or above, wetsuits will be prohibited in line with World Triathlon rules.

The race will set off with wave starts from the lake beach in groups of around 60-120 athletes per wave.

Several swim buoys will guide you around the three-lap swim including three large turn buoys outlined on the map. You will leave the water at the end of each lap for an Australian exit, run up the beach and around a large tree – enjoying support from cheering crowds – before diving back in.

There will be volunteers to help athletes out of their wetsuits if they need assistance. Transition is a short 250m run across carpet from the beach exit and T1 and T2 are in the same location.

Bike – 80km

PTO Canadian Open 100km Race Bike Course Map

The bike course starts and finishes in Hawrelak Park and winds through Edmonton’s river valley with some challenging uphill sections. The course sweeps through the green spaces of Edmonton along the North Saskatchewan River and up into the city centre. The entire course is closed with two lanes dedicated for racers for the majority of the route.

The bike features four 20km laps loops back through the stadium area on each lap. You will climb steadily up out of the river valley and back down three times on every lap for approximately 190m of elevation gain for every lap or 760m for the full 80km. The climbs average between 4-8% gradient and are 800m to 2km in length.

80km Bike Aid Stations

The bike aid station will be positioned around 8.4km from transition on each lap, giving four opportunities to top up on energy and drinks thanks to our Official Fuel & Hydration Partner, Precision Fuel & Hydration.

There will also be mechanical support and toilets available at the aid station.

  • Lap 1: 8.4km
  • Lap 2: 28.4km
  • Lap 3: 48.4km
  • Lap 4: 68.4km

Run – 18km

PTO Canadian Open 100km Race Run Course Map

The four-lap run course is mostly flat, providing a quintessential Canadian experience racing through the lush greenery of Hawrelak Park along the closed roadway.

During each 4.5km lap, you will cross the river upon reaching the backside of the park and continue along a mixed surface trail through Buena Vista Park woods. At around 2.25km, you’ll turn around and head back over the bridge, around the park and towards the stadium area along the same route.

At the end of lap four, you’ll turn into a finish fit for the world’s best

18km run Aid Stations

There will be two aid stations on each lap (so four in total given the out and back route as aid stations will be accessible from both running directions). This will give plenty of opportunities to stay fuelled and hydrated thanks to our Official Fuel & Hydration Partner, Precision Fuel & Hydration.

  • Each lap: 0.6km, 1.4km, 3.1km, 3.9km

Event Schedule

PTO Canadian Open 2022

The full event schedule will incorporate a selection of side events as well as swim course familiarisation and plenty to see and do around the event village. There will also be the opportunity to get up close and personal with the pros as you watch the world’s top-ranked athletes fight for a slice of the $1m prize purse.

Precision Fuel & Hydration

Staying well fuelled and hydrated during your PTO Tour race is essential if you want to perform at your best (and avoid the dreaded DNF!).

That's why Precision Fuel & Hydration will be providing their award-winning electrolyte drinks, energy gels and chews on course.

Race-Day Nutrition

Here’s what’ll be available in your race pack on on-course at this year’s race.

Your race pack will include a packet of all-natural PH 1500 drink mix, a very strong electrolyte drink designed to help you start well hydrated.

Our aid stations will be stocked with PH 1000, a strong electrolyte drink designed to help you stay hydrated when you’re sweating. It contains around 2x as much sodium as a standard sports drink.

PF 30 Energy Gels will also be out on the course. They contain 30g of carb and have a very mild, neutral taste, reducing flavour fatigue during longer efforts. The texture is designed to reduce stickiness in the mouth and minimise the need to wash them down with fluid immediately.

PF 30 Energy Chews can feel more satisfying to eat than gels during longer races and when working at slightly lower intensities, making them a great way to mix up your fuelling plan. Each packet contains 2 chews efficiently delivering 15g of carb each. The “Original” flavour chews have a mild, neutral taste and look out for the Mint & Lemon chews for a refreshing option when you’re working hard in hot conditions.

Advice and Special Offers From Precision Fuel & Hydration

You’ll receive a detailed Fuelling and Hydration briefing email a few weeks before your event with advice on how to best use the products on course to maximise your performance.

If you want to try the on-course fuel and hydration in training, you can pick up a PTO Tour Taster Pack. Don’t forget to use the code DEATHTODNF to get 20% off your first order.

PTO Tour competitors will also have access to VIP support from the Precision Fuel & Hydration team in the build up to the big day, so you can be sure that you’re ready to race.

Social Referral Rebate

The PTO Tour Social Referral Rebate programme allows you to earn 100% of your entry fee back. All you need to do is refer three friends to the same race! Here's how it works...

The Social Referral Rebate programme gives you 100% of your PTO Tour event entry back if you refer three other athletes who also register for the same event. It’s our way of rewarding you for spreading the word about our events.

Once you’ve completed registration, you will receive a registration confirmation email from Active Network. It’s easy to spot – the one with a big QR code in it!

In this email you’ll find a referral link to share with your friends, family, clubmates, clients or whoever else shares your passion for triathlon.

If someone else signs up for the event using your code, that registration counts towards one of your referrals. You’ll need three to get your entry fee rebate.

If you can’t find your link in your Active Network confirmation email, you can follow these steps to get your code.

  • Login to your Active Network account at: myevents.active.com
  • Scroll down until you locate your event registration
  • Directly under the registration, next to text that states: Refer your friends, followed by social media icons, click copy link to get your unique link.

Your entry refund will be processed on the last day of the same month in which your event takes place. It may take a few days to hit your account.

Yes – the relay captain could refer their other teammates to sign up. Team members who sign up will receive their own code upon registering.

No, only entries for the same event will count. So if you enter the PTO US Open, that’s the only event for which your referral link will be valid.

If a registration is transferred, no referral rebate will be applied.

Yes, the referral rebate will be applied based on registration fee of the new category.

No, cancelled registrants will not receive rebates.

In order to qualify, all referred athletes must have a valid registration on the day of the event, whether or not they actually take part in the event or not.

If you entered before the Social Referral Programme was live, you can still take advantage of it. However, the mechanism will be a little different to that outlined above. Please get in touch with us at [email protected] or [email protected] to start the process.

The Social Referral Rebate programme is non-transferrable. All referred athletes must have valid registrations on the day of the event. Referrals only valid for the same event signed up to by the original referrer. If referrer’s original entry is subsidised, the rebate amount will reflect the subsidised entry amount.

Cancellation policy

Injuries/medical conditions

We understand that sometimes training for an event doesn’t go to plan, so we’re offering a 100% refund up to 21 days prior to the race if you get injured or have another medical issue that prevents you from taking part. For COVID-related cancellations, please see the section below.

All you need to do is send us a medical certificate/acknowledgment of your injury from a healthcare professional and we’ll refund you.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

COVID

We know that COVID continues to add a level of uncertainty to planning triathlon event schedules but we’re committed to making sure you get the race experience you deserve.

As well as a full refund if the event itself is cancelled due to COVID,  we’re also offering a 100% refund if you’re unable to attend or race a PTO Tour event due to personal COVID related issues – such as a requirement to isolate following contact with an infected individual, infection with COVID, lack of sufficient recovery from a COVID infection or other similar reason.

All you need to do is submit evidence of your positive COVID test (PCR or antigen/lateral flow) or other supporting medical report confirming you inability to race.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

Becoming a parent

Becoming a parent is an important time in any athlete’s life – and the inflexibility of your race schedule shouldn’t add to the stress. That’s why we’re offering a 100% refund up to 21 days prior to the event if you are imminently due to become a parent or have just become a parent and are prevented from racing due to this.

Please get in touch with us at [email protected] to start the process.

Other circumstances

For non-medical cancellation reasons more than 21 days out from the event, such as family emergencies, bereavements, relocation or other circumstances that prevent you from racing, please get in touch with us at [email protected] and we’ll be as flexible as we possibly can to avoid you missing out.

Covid info

We understand the powerful effect COVID has had on the triathlon world, so to reassure you we’ve put together a simple COVID protocols list and associated cancellation policy.
